For the majority of my life, I lived in Alaska, the land of eternal darkness in the winter and eternal daylight in the summer.
Alaskan summers are also mostly rainy, a fact which tends to put a bit of a crimp in outdoorsy fun. These strange light and weather patterns meant that there were many traditional seasonal activities that just weren’t options. Now that I am again in the lower-48 (the nickname we Alaskans have for the continental US), I am actually very excited for this season.
That being said, summertime as an adult is full of far more boring adulty responsibility than the carefree summers of childhood. Most of my summer really just looks like getting up ridiculously early to get to work on time. However, I’m unwilling to accept the possibility of the season slipping unnoticed through my fingers. I want to aim to make this season feel as relaxing and sun-dappled as possible! I can taste the sweet lemonade now…
My Summer Bucket List:
· Take a road trip, if even for the day
· Take a walk in the warm embrace of summer darkness
· Eat brunch outside (preferably in pastel-colored, breezy pants)
· Make homemade popsicles and let the sugary goodness drip down your chin as you relax outside
· Try a new fruit!
· Wear sunscreen (my number one life rule, learned the very hard way; read about it here: http://thegirlbecoming.blogspot.com/2018/07/travel-to-thailand-part-1-lessons-on_12.html)
· Buy a new pair of shorts!
· Go swimming… in a lake… in the ocean… in an outdoor pool… in one of those inflatable kiddie pools...
· Apply self-tanner generously (because you may still be pale since you wore your sunscreen, right?)
· Did you forget about (or more likely, intentionally ignore) spring cleaning? Revamp your space now! Clear the clutter! Vacuum! You know the drill
· Spend a whole afternoon reading on your stomach in the sunshine (I recommend decks, balconies, and soft grassy spots)
· Give exactly zero shits about what your body looks like in your bikini. Darling, that body has helped you do and see a lot of amazing things; appreciate it
· Go for an evening bike ride. Bring friends for memory-making or go solo for memory-reminiscing
· Sit outside at a coffee shop and sip your drink with your face turned skywards
· Lay in the grass and make shapes out of white, fluffy clouds
· Put on a sundress and wear it around the house (do some spins and twirls while you’re at it!)
· Find a lake, make some friends, take friends to said lake. Brings snacks
· Have a picnic in the park (all the lovelier if you are by yourself with a book). Strawberries, vintage dress, and adorably cut sandwiches not strictly mandatory, but definitely delightful
· String fairy lights outside and have a mini dinner party beneath the stars
· Go camping and eat vegan s’mores over your own campfire
· Find a local farmer’s market. Lovingly pick out produce and fresh flowers for your room
· Attend an outdoor concert—bring blankets and a dear friend
There you have it! I’ve already been busy checking off activities… I mayyy have spent more than one afternoon reading in the sunshine…
No matter what your summer looks like (each of our lives is so gorgeously unique), I hope that you feel as though you’ve made the most of your time earthside.
Love,
Lola
